THE CALL

How might we help Swiss SMEs understand, reduce, and manage climate risks — so they can adapt to climate change and build long-term resilience?

Climate risks are on the rise, creating growing uncertainty for businesses — particularly for SMEs, which often lack the tools and expertise to effectively respond. AXA Switzerland (hereinafter referred to as AXA) aims to go beyond traditional insurance by supporting SMEs in proactively adapting to these challenges and building long-term resilience.

To achieve this, AXA is seeking innovative solutions — ranging from climate risk modeling and sensor-based monitoring to adaptation planning and supply chain resilience. The goal is clear: to help SMEs stay informed, prepared, and protected in the face of climate change.

QUESTIONS?

Here is everything else you need to know about the Call for Innovation

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS LIKE?

Startups will be evaluated based on the innovativeness of their solution, its potential impact on SMEs, scalability, and alignment with AXA’s goals for climate resilience. After the initial screening, selected startups will be invited to pitch their solutions. Final decisions are made based on a combination of the pitch and a thorough evaluation of each solution’s fit.

HOW LONG IS THE PILOT PHASE AND WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?

The pilot phase typically lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on the scope of the solution. During this phase, startups will collaborate closely with AXA and SMEs to test and refine their technology in real-world conditions. The goal is to validate the solution’s impact, usability, and scalability. Startups will receive ongoing support from both AXA and Bluelion throughout the pilot.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PILOT PHASE?

After the pilot phase, there are multiple opportunities for continued collaboration. AXA may decide to integrate your solution into their offerings, continue testing, or explore further investment opportunities. Startups can also benefit from increased exposure and networking opportunities within AXA’s ecosystem.

IS THERE ANY COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATING STARTUPS?

Yes, AXA will cover the costs for startups to run the pilot. This includes financial support for the resources required to deploy and test your solution in a real-world environment. The pilot will be a paid engagement, ensuring that startups are compensated for their time, effort, and the technical implementation of their solution.

WHAT FURTHER RESOURCES AND SUPPORT WILL BE PROVIDED DURING THE PILOT?

Startups will receive access to a range of resources, including expert mentoring from AXA and Bluelion’s network. You’ll also get assistance with testing your solution in real-world conditions, access to industry-specific data, and guidance on scaling. The team will work closely with you to ensure the pilot runs smoothly and effectively.

CAN STARTUPS FROM OUTSIDE SWITZERLAND APPLY?

Yes — startups from across Europe are welcome to apply. Please note, however, that we’re seeking technology providers (i.e. you) whose solutions serve Swiss SMEs. Your proposal should demonstrate how your product or service is relevant and scalable for the Swiss SME market.

WHAT ARE THE KEY CRITERIA FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION?

Successful applicants typically have:

A solution that aligns with AXA’s goal of improving climate resilience for SMEs.

A scalable, innovative solution that addresses climate risks for SMEs.

A market-ready product with proven results or commercial traction.

A clear business model and the ability to demonstrate measurable impact.

A strong team with technical expertise and the ability to execute.

HOW DO I APPLY TO THE PROGRAM?

You can apply directly through the Bluelion website. Simply fill out the application form with details about your startup, your solution, and why it’s relevant to the needs of SMEs dealing with climate risks. Be sure to include a demo or prototype of your technology and any other supporting materials that showcase your innovation.
